Below I have listed just some of the photographic memories from my days onboard USS PAUL. They are of various evolutions
of the ship, such as weapons firings, and underway replenishment. I have also included a few of the sites and port visits I made while onboard. I've tried to provide explanations in text for some of the photos that require a little background to understand what's going on. The other pictures are fairly
self explanatory. Just click on the thumbnail below and it will load the full image. Hope you enjoy !!
PORT VISITS
These were taken during a port visit to Alexandria, Egypt. We took a tour bus to Cairo to see the Pyramids.

UNUSUAL MOMENTS
These are pictures taken outside the USO in Naples, Italy April 14th 1988, just minutes after the Car Bomb exploded.

During one of my Med cruises, our L.A.M.P.S. helicopter flew out on a mission and ran into some electrical problems causing the pilot
to start looking for a place to ditch the helo in the water because he was running out of fuel and unable to make it back to the ship.
However at the last moment the pilot spotted a French merchant vessel steaming close by, and proceeded to make an Emergency landing
on the forward part of the merchant ship while it was steaming through the water at 16 knots. He was able to set the helo down with
only a few feet of clearance between the helo's rotor blades and the ships masts. Great Job Sir !
Here we are pulling into the port of Valencia, Spain to recover the Helicopter sitting on the deck of the merchant.

One day while on the same Med cruise we were passing close to the island of Cyprus and our Captain at the time, CDR L.S. Julihn,
made an announcement on the 1MC (ships announcing system) that the ship was near a Soviet mooring buoy (known in the intel world as the "South of Cyprus Buoy") and was going to stop
in order to help our Soviet friends who were too busy spreading communism around the world and didn't have the time to
perform the preventative maintenance (corrosion protection) on their buoys. So the O.O.D. (Mark Fedorko) sent the motor whaleboat over to it to do a little
painting ;-) When they had finished, the top of the buoy was painted like a big smiley face, in the mouth was stenciled "Have a Nice
U.S. Navy Day !" and they attached a U.S. Postal sticker to the buoy and declared it an Official Navy Mail Buoy.
Quite a productive day for both world diplomacy and Cold War Naval relations. Bravo Zulu Capt. Julihn

USING THE WEAPONS
At various times the PAUL would be called upon to demonstrate her capability to use the weapons onboard. Such as the 5" gun,
Harpoon Anti-ship missile, Mark 46 torpedo, and .50 cal machine guns. Below are a few pics from these practice firings.
The 5" 54 Main Gun ( pic#1 ) doing NGFS practice on land, ( pic #2 ) on the water, ( pic#3 ) and firing a StarShell (parachute flare) at night with a long exposure set on the camera ( pic# 4 ).

Next is the Firing of a Harpoon missile at an old Navy destroyer. Pic# 1 is of the waiting crew, Pic# 2 is one of the F-14
chase planes, and Pic# 3 is the Harpoon missile right after launch.

This first Pic is of a Mark 46 Torpedo at the moment it's fired from the starboard tube. The next 2 pics are of an inflatable sea target for .50 cal BMG practice.

For a little change of pace here are 2 pics of some A-7 Corsairs that came over from the Carrier just to Strafe (fire their 20 mm cannon) in our wake

UNDERWAY REPLENISHMENT ( UNREP )
In order to be able to stay operating at sea full time, U.S. Navy ships will from time to time need to be refueled and resupplied.
The UNREP is where 2 or 3 ships come along side each other and match speed in order to transfer fuel and supplies. It is by it's nature
a very dangerous evolution, but one that must be performed, and is performed several times a day, 365 days a year all over the world by Navy personnel
The 2 pictues shown here are during an UNREP. The Paul's Executive Officer ( XO ) CDR Williams, had to be transferred the old fashion way by a chair between the two moving ships. So lines are run across with line throwing guns and pulled by hand until the chair gets rigged up. Then
off he goes.. ( gee I hope there isn't any slack in those lines ;-).

The next photo was during a slightly unusual UNREP. In 1987 the Paul deployed as a member of the USS IOWA BB-61's Battlegroup
BBBG 1-87, when attacks on merchant shipping increased in the Persian Gulf. This photo is an conglomeration of 3 different pictures
I took while we were along side taking fuel from the USS IOWA. It might give you some idea of her scale.

Sometimes while conducting these evolutions, our friends the Soviets would come a little close to have a look at us.

THE PAUL DOES IT ALL
The rest of these photos are of the USS Paul herself and a few other various things like one of the several burials at sea we performed and other stuff I found while digging. The last Image shown is a scan of the Decommissioning Plaque, submitted to me by Mr Jim Mazy, thanks Jim it makes a great addition.
